They did release a paper about the thing before they opened it to the unwashed masses and certainly complained in it about how some people/groups that they knew had significant amounts of data would not give it to them. it's more of a starting point rather than being the bible. |

Dosent seem to be working now. Worked ok yesterday though I couldnt find any interesting information on it. |

yeah - looks like someone has been fiddling on their end. Either that, or the half dozen of us that accessed it, exceeded their expectations and overloaded the server

Old thread I know, but I'm pretty disappointed that Fisheries don't seem to be adding to this at all since it's initial launch back in '10. Either they don't have the time, don't think it's a priority, or are too strict with their sighting qualifications. If they're really concerned about feral species, as they say on one of the tabs, then why not take sightings from the public as well ? They can be classified accordingly and filtered out if high cetrtainty data is required. Using peer-reviewed research papers as almost your only source of info is extremely limting. |

or that public knowledge may lead to hammering of a fish species in a particular error.. that is the reason they dont publish marron locations and populations. |

Well, it wouldn't be hard to hold back the marron and cobbler data - anything else worth catching is an introduced/feral species (koonacs & gilgies excluded as I think anybody that wants to catch them already knows where to do it). On the other hand, highlighting ferals would help control them, e.g. - redfin - yabbies - silver perch - trout |

I think a little piece of me died when I read you calling yabbies...ferals, chilli. But your right, they are very destructive to waterways. I think Marron populations and locations is a different story, the species is governed...you need a licence to trap them, strict sizing, strict bag limits and transport documentation. Caught outside of fishing seasons and without the proper licence holds extremely high fines. This small window of opertunity that is under tight scrutiny would prevent accurate data from the general public. |

Don't worry Charlie - feral doesn't mean they don't taste good. I believe redfin are one of the best tatsing fish out there ! They're not cultured across Europe and even in New Zealand because they're crap. And yabbies, of course, yum ! |
