Has anyone kept eels?

i remember feeding them at the melbourne botanic gardens when i was a kid
so im sure they take a pellet

and i know smoked eel (unagi) was delicious when i was in Japan

My friends in NNSW catch heaps of them whenever they go fishing
they survive out of water well

too bad WA people can have tilapia but no eels. good way to get rid of excess babies.

question is..

has anyone done it. and do you have any pointers?
im especially curious about growth rates.
could we catch a small (legal) eel in the river and fatten it up

very true, last time had them in the jap. restaurant opposite Paddy's entrance in Sydney

Used to fish them nearby some years ago before my spot was turned into a Water Sport Centre for the Comm. Games. :angryfire:

afaik elvers are extremely hard to come by. They breed in salt water and are only wild caught. although there's another thread here stating that the Kiwis have made some progress in the captive breeding, and can now breed viable elvers. However perhaps not economically yet.

for any one in W.A, there is a sea food shop on leach highway that used to sell live eals, at the intersection of North lake road and Leach highway, near Bunnings, they had them in a big tank next to silver perch and cray fish.

i say used to because i havent been there for a while so i dont know if they still keep them in stock.

No I haven't Hydro, I like to share my knowledge, but it's rare that I'll be excited enough to research a topic. I was waiting for some1 to say they were doing it, and you could get em cheap from "here" :-)

yes i recall seeing live eels in tanks at chinese restaurants in northbridge

same in brisbane in fortitude valley at yeos/yuens? supermarket

i was just thinking of a 'feedlot fattening' situation

catch small eels in the river while fishing, turn them into big eels in AP...

hay juice, we dont get to catch eels over here but i am doing that (catch ing and fatening) with bream and hoping to do that with redfin perch,

that way i can enjoy fishing and have a fresh feed when i want once they are all fattened up in the tank.

WTF? They eat other fish! I want suckers that eat algae only... I got excited until I saw 'lamprey' :-( do we have any cold water algae eating fish?

well theres freshwater prawns in the collie river
dont they eat algae?

i took a scoop net to the river edge near the tafe in collie, and came up with all sorts of beauties
pygmy perch, shrimp and other aquatic fauna

i did have the glass shrimp in my system and they went realy well untill i disterbed the system and they all got eaten and i havent been able to get any more.

have seen lots of those big suckers in pemberton, they make my skin crawll
