Anyone tried Macrobrachium Australiense (http://www.livefish.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1793)?

I caught some on the weekend and added them to my FT to clean up what the fish don't eat. I'm hoping they don't eat each other (the SPs are mostly ~30mm, with 2 @ 150mm, the shrimp are between 20mm and 50mm, not including claws). Anyone had any experience?

Bugger. What about a mesh floor a couple of inches about the bottom of the tank, big enough for the excess food to fall in? It seems my silvers won't eat anything off the bottom...

I hear you! My silvers will eat of the bottom, but they wont eat anything that's been wet for longer than 5 minutes. Pesky picky fish. Of course, they're eating next to nothing atm.

I think the mesh might work, if the shrimp were not too silly.

It is a fresh water PRAWN ,, a shrimp is a "small person" often apparently eaten by Americans.

The freshwater PRAWN with best growth characteristics and commercial aptitude is the rosenbergii , grown througout SE Asia . Recently there has been a big push for this to be grown here in Aus.

Been tried over in WA a few times Chappo, called cherabin here, native to the northern rivers. Water temps are the main problem in the south.

How about the freshwater black tiger prawn ....quick to grow, and maybe even spawn in the right conditions

I don't want to pick, but I believe a shrimp to be a small marine crustacean similar to a crayfish, however ultra thin in every dimension, and 1/10 the length of a crayfish. and about 1/3 the length of a yabbie.

It is certainly not a prawn though.

ashly, Chappo is correct ;) (shock horror gasp )

The genus Macrobrachium is from the family Palmonidae, which are the freshwater prawns. The glass shrimp more people are familiar with are from the family Atyiidae, which are the freshwater shrimps.

(see I did learn stuff at that course after all ;) ) (ask AaronJ he was there!)

Jaymie , I had top get one correct sooner or later:)

Yep known as Cherabin in most of Aussie land ..... called Kung ( Goong) in Thailand and used in that famous soup Tom yum Goong.

2 years ago a major break through was achieved in Thailand , the ability to re-sex?? a male to female and it's offspring are all male ,,

Take a look here ....., http://thailand.prd.go.th/thailand_illu ... p?s_id=305
