I've often wondered how fish are able to survive for long periods without Oxygen at the bottom of frozen lakes. I always thought that as temperature drops, more Oxygen would dissolve into the water and would even diffuse through the ice layer. It seems though, that carp can survive in these conditions even when no Oxygen is remaining and other fish like trout have keeled over. New research has shown how carp (goldfish, Crucian Carp) are able to survive for months under frozen lakes without Oxygen. They do it by using alcohol to break down a dangerous build up of lactic acid, that would kill most other fish and animals under anaerobic conditions. (our muscles can operate anaerobically for a few minutes during sprints - which is why you don't normally breathe when using short, sudden bursts of speed - but we then keep puffing after a race to switch the muscles back to aerobic function and break down the lactic acid). But Bullwinklell, why have you hanging around the bottom of low Oxygen frozen lakes? At least your beers would've been cold LOL. And SeanD, after consuming 16,000 goldfish, your Omega3 levels would be fantastic...and you'd have really earned a cold beer chuckle chuckle! |
