Jeffrey, there is a search feature in the page header that allows you to get either posts or threads with certain key words....like Jade or Swimming. Making through 100,000 posts is a bit daunting. I do know that swimming pool conversions have been discussed, as well as the merits of Jades, Silvers and Golds.

Welcome to the forum!

You'll have to heat your water Jeff if you want to grow them in Perth through the winter as they have negligible growth below 20c and can die at 13c!!

Hi Bio, Got off the phone today from the WA fisheries, there response to me wanting a permit for jade perch went like;

"it shouldn't be a problem in the aquarium like set up of AP system, especially when you consider the quantity your after, so put in for a trans location permit, but don't bet on it"

I don't know if this is a yes or a no to getting a permit, but i did find out it would only be good for 12 months anyhow... The fisheries dept is very keen for me to use native species, and truth is if i found one worth it, i wouldn't hesitate. They suggested fresh water cobbler, but i believe it tastes foul!!! So i will put in for a permit or wait 6/8 weeks for the weather to cool down, and put trout in.

Other species mentioned was Murray Cod and Tilapia.

Can anyone suggest a fish species for WA?

wow seems like WA fisheries are worded up on the hobby side of AP now!

my tip? use a SMALL system as the proposed system in your documentation to them. the less is looks and feels like aquaculture to them the higher your chances i reckon.

yeah, i been looking, but not successfully.. ..it seems like people are basically using Barra and trout, but there systems are already cycled. I just feel that mine is too new, plus i would like a hardy fish, one that can tolerate a novice looking after it, and jade perch seems to be the answer

Silver Perch have a wider temperature tolerance JR :wink:

Yeah, apparently WA fisheries have an AP expert they are now liaising with!!!

So, Sorry to be a complete novice RupertofOZ, but people have told me silver perch can be a bit "finicky", like they either work or they dont like???

Is this unfair to the old silver perch?

i think there are a couple of parameters that they really dont like........

think green water for one and i'm leaning to maybe a high ph (or ph swings) either.........

many have found them to be VERY hardy

thats cool, thanks steve, i did the first water test today, and the results went like;
Ammonia = 0.1
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 0
PH = 8.5
Tim C tells me the Ph will be ok, and settle down soon
