Um... bit of a grey area, fish shops will buy them off you no worries. People have been breeding and selling fish privately for years so as far as I know it isn't illegal... To tell the truth I would never buy fish from the LFS anymore, WAY too expensive.

Hey Steve do you want to move these last few posts into a new thread, so we don't hijack this one further?

will do!

I have two electric yellows in my aquarium, ne had made what looks liek a nest, but might just be a hidy hole under a piece of wood. the two fish look different (male / female?) but don't actually hang out together much.

would love for them to breed :)

It is always good to have a bit of a colony going eg. 5 or 6. That way they begin to pair up. Plus, if it is a community tank with potential predators you might have a problem. The yellows are also mouth brooders so they need somewhere safe to lay the eggs while the male does his thing...

How big are your yellows?

the reason i ask is that a guy in the industry who knows someone who breeds goldies told me you need i license to sell them. i was wondering if its the same with cichlids? i didn't know you needed a license to sell goldies before he told me. i wonder how difficult they are to get.

It depends on how many you are going to sell. If it is like a couple hundred a year, then I don't see an issue. You will sell most privately anyway.

A good idea would be to breed fish you could trade to your supplier of table fish to offset your fish costs.

BF, see here:
http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/docs/pub/Aqua ... x.php?0307
for licence info.
Basically, if you plan to make money buy selling fish looks like you need a licence and at $400 a yr you would want to be selling a few fish.

I think if you could not offset the cost of the license then then I would imagine that the operation is commercially viable.

Ie Selling/trading goldfish to offset your aquaponics with no financial gain would not be considered commercial.

$400 for selling goldies. ouch.

i guess an idea would be to breed and grow out goldies as a hobby for a couple years until you have enough to cover the licensing fee.

so are the aquarium shops breaking the rules by purchasing stock from unlicensed sellers?

i was offered cash or credit by my aquarium shop.

I think the line is quite wide BF.

- If you setup with the intention of solely breeding and selling fish for profit you would need a license.

- If you breed fish as a "hobby" and "occasionally" sold the fish it would be OK.

- I think if you kept and breed fish for the purpose of increasing or funding your hobby. Ie offsetting food or other fish I think it would be ok.

Yep it will become more regulated but it's still a bit grey.
If I had a good sized ornamental operation going I would contact the big wholesalers like bayfish, or aquarium industrys. You may get less $$ but can prob shift more units.
Electric yellows are good for lfs as they sell so well, but you do need a good few to get the ball rolling as they are only small mouthfulls at first. Hard to get girls as well lol
With 1 male and 10 girls you crank them out tho as long as theres no one to interrupt!
