Post subject:  Gathering info on ALL species - help appreciated

Hey guys I'm new here, made my introduction in the new members area. I don't have a system yet but hopefully in a couple months I will be able to start. In the mean time I figured I would start gathering information. This site has a well put together information section but it is very basic. It's become a pet peeve of mine to have to waste my time searching to find what others already know so I figure if I have to waste my time sorting through stuff, I might as well put it together in a resource so people can spend more of their time "doing" instead of searching. I started looking through this sub-forum and realized there are so many types and I don't plan on wasting my time trying to research every single one. Enough about that, lets get a good resource going.

There are two parts to this initially; one is to expand the list of relevant information which I will start and the second will be any specific information you guys can contribute which I can organize.

Type: Trout
Sub species: Rainbow
Native region:
Water temp:
Food consumption:
PH level:
Growth rate:
Time to maturity:
Average sizes: minimum average size, mature size, max size
Tolerance temp change: specific, relative
Tolerance PH change: specific, relative
Tolerance health: such as dealing with sickness, bacteria etc
Aggressiveness:
Sociability: can they coexist with other fish, what types, other water creatures etc.
Breeding:
Special considerations: anything special on raising them
Taste: personal description, relate to other foods
Nutrition: what nutrients they provide such as types of fats, protein, vitamins, minerals etc.
Caution: any health concerns from consumption
Waste: what byproducts their waste is good for such as nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.

Ok so I think that's a fairly good place to start although I would like to see what else you guys can add. The idea is to create this resource so that it is very easy to find the information you need without having to waste a bunch of time reading. If you guys can provide the pieces, I'll start to put them together. As I said, please make suggestions for more information categories and let me know if any of the ones I've listed need corrections in their terminology.

Check this one out. Very good information, specially if you are in USA. They can not have Tilapia in Australia.

Thanks for the link, do you know of any more resources that have info on more than just the 2 fish? I'm trying to avoid doing it the long way and was really hoping people here could fill in the blanks as much as possible.

Hi :wave1:

I havnt been through them all but here is 26 threads within this forum with the words "fish species" in the title.

search.php?keywords=fish+species&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sk=t&sd=d&sr=topics&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Most seem to be within australia but you may get something from them. Have a play with the search function if you would like to try different criteria.

I will if I have to but again, I was hoping people could chime in and make things a bit easier. It's quite a bit of work to put all of the information together so it is useful without tons of reading. I'm working on a few for now to get the layout right and then hopefully I can post it so you guys can see what I mean.

I am still interested to know if there are any categories I should include that I haven't already in terms of relevant information. My perspective is only that of a noob and you guys are more knowledgeable and would know better than I as to what is important. Thanks for the link.

Ok Im getting what your up to, sorry Im a bad skim reader.

Your categories are very good, maybe food type would be another I would add. Some like sinking, some like floating and/or different types of feed.

Ill give you a hand with this tomorrow if you like, getting late here now. :thumbleft:

That would be awesome! I don't keep normal hours so no worries. The whole idea for this is to cram as much information as possible with as little "reading" as possible. I'm going to try and put this all together on a site at some point and would like to have individual pages for each fish but for now I want to create a main page or document that summarizes as much as possible.

The way I explained it to my sister who does web design was to think of a race car game. When you choose your car, it shows you things like top speed, acceleration, handling, braking etc. but in a nice visual bar graph format so you can very quickly determine what's what. Not all of the information can be formatted that way but that's the basic idea.

You could answer many of those from wikipedia pretty quickly

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_trout

scientific name would also be useful
