Not likely in the short term. The relocation thing is just about moving the fish around the state. For someone to bring them in from outside, breed and then sell them requires a lot of paperwork and a lot of time

So do they have the same temp tolerances and growth of rainbows?

How similar to rainbows are they? and with this new fish relocation thing, would we possibly see them in WA any time soon?

From what I know they cant handle the warm water temps as well as Browns or Rainbows and are also a bit slower growing. Be interesting to see how Bundy goes with them once it begins to warm up a bit.

I dont think you'll ever see them in WA, with the continued decline in rainfall affecting stream flows its getting pretty hard to farm any trout let alone one that requires even cooler water.

Interresting you should say that troutman. If I remember correctly, the place flogging their advantages to Bundy is saying the complete opposite.....or have I got my self mixed up bundy?

Apart from catching a few in Tassie I have had no experience with Brooks but all of the books I have say they require cooler water than Browns/Rainbows. Perhaps Bundy can hang onto a few and see how they go compared to his Rainbows once things start to warm up a bit.

The key things the breeder mentioned were that they were beating his rainbows for growth this season, (not sure if that would be the case every season or other variances in the breeding) and the other was that they are more tolerant to lack of oxygen.

I had no intentions of finding out their tolerance to temp since they are should all be in my tummy before it heats up here. I was shocked to get a lone rainbow through summer last year (he's still swimming too by the way) but could try and push one or two through. I may actually try and take half a dozen trout through summer this year to determine if it can be done. I would love to be running trout year round but who knows what this summer may bring.

From what Ive read here, trout tolerance for temps is highly correlated with their tolerances to oxygen, given that the DO holding ability of water decreases with higher temps??

Yes, no?

Yes and no, as the water warms the less oxygen it retains, however you can pump as much air into the water but if its too warm they don't like it.

Well found out slightly a little more regarding the brook trout tolerance to lack of DO.
Had my power trip the other day, hasn't triped for ages and just turns out that I had the back up battery disconnected and on charge in the shed.

Any way long story short, 10 dead rainbows and the rest were lucky to survive. had to run the hose in the rainbow tank for over an hour to replenish the oxygen enough to get them all swimming again. 10 dead rainbows weighed in at just over 1.2kg. So again shows how much the brooks are beating them for size.

No dead brooks and they did not even looked stressed or starved of DO would still be 15 or so in the tank and the last one I pulled out weighed in at a perfect 300gm.
All the rainbows were at the surface gasping for air but the brooks were not acting any different to normal.
