For your location, this time of year.. I'd advise trout.

Steerey,

I'd advise you contact the people at Aquablue Seafoods (at Pindimar)... check the link.

http://www.aquablueseafoods.com.au/bass.shtml

Last time I was there (about 3 months ago) thay had mostly broodstock, but they also had plenty of bass, silver perch, and a few other odds and ends.... well worth a look.

Give them a call and check out their setup. BTW, not sure where in Newie you are, but Pindimar is about 30-45mins north of Newcastle, along the Pacific Highway.

I've got silvers and catfish but they are on the go slow as it cools. If you can get a few trout they will perform better over winter. Or goldies if you don't want to eat them.

Bass are a two year growout... Silver about 15-18 months, especially as during winter they basically don't eat/grow...

Neils (Aquablue)... Silver Perch were spawned and ready for sale toward end of January ... so should be about 200mm+ by now.... which would probably cope through the winter...

Depends... will you tank be outside?... enclosed in a greenhouse/shed??

the tanks will be outside not much coverage ,so pretty much out in the elements.

Too cold to get Silver Perch fingerlings through winter then ... IMO... and even if you did, they wouldn't grow... and wouldn't be ready until next March anyway.... at the earliest...

Trout is by far your best option in the circumstances.... with the option of obtaining advanced Silver Perch fingerlings around Oct, early Nov... which would allow you to then carry them through next winter...

Of course by then... you'll have a nother tank or bigger system... and can still do another batch of trout as well....
