Anyone see these around the various aquarium shops in VIC?

Although all Tilapia of the Oreochromis, Sarotherodon and Tilapia species are on the noxious list, Tilapia Buttikoferi are specifically excluded.

Looking at giving these guys a try.

Good luck ! Make sure you keep us updated.

Everything I've read suggests you may have some issues with aggressiveness - they sound like a piscine version of the yabby in that regard. But you never know until you try.

Thinking of crowding them to reduce the agressive behaviour

Maybe it will work...maybe not...

At worst the initial few I buy become my pets.

Called Keysborough aquariums to ask about their 4 seven year old fish.

They have had little interest in them for the last 3 years that they have had them in the shop. Have never bred, which is strange for them. They dont know if they have paired or what the sexes are.

Guess how much they wanted for them? :dontknow:

$900 a pair

Yup :naughty:

NINE HUNDRED

To put it in perspective, another place in Blackburn had small juveniles for $15 each. But they had sold out by the time I called. :support:

Given they mature in less than a year, I was left scrtching my head how they got $900 for 2.

wow, $900. for a pair, and they done even know if they are pairs, and they havent bred before. Tell him he's dreaming.

They are a very pretty little fish, so i'm not surprised they move quite quickly at $15 each.

Are you planning these for eating? if you can get $15 each for juvies, i'd flood the market with them, and buy your eating fish ;) at least for a year or so until demand dies down.

Good luck with the searching

Just looking for another source of fish for summer.

Not sure if Melbourne summers can facilitate barra.

So with only catfish and SP for summer...want to add tilapia to the mix.

Funily enough, Nile Tliapia were allowable imports as recent as 2008.

As were many other ornamentals.... sadly the rules have changed... in a large part because aquaria owners kept dumping unwanted fish into natural waterways...

$900? They must have been big fish....

Saw a silver perch the other day at an aquarium shop which was under 500g for $50...

Nope. Nothing came of my search. There was a guy in geelong trying to hock his but as soon as I asked, he had a change of heart.

Still reeling from the 900 a pair keysbourogh aquarium wanted for their fish which had never spawned before. Shows what type of business they are.
