Post subject:  My fish eat fat.

Today I cook for my dogs.
After feed my dogs I hang the boiler in my fish thank to let fish eat the rest of food.
Then I notice that fat floating on the water surface. then in notice that fishes eat the fat.
I did like this many times but never notice. But don't know why fat is gone.

The aeration flow fat to one side of FT and fishes are on the surface of that side.

Just wonder, I never know before

Hello Ao+,

What sort of fish do you have? and

What sort of fat are they eating?

That's an interesting looking tank you've got there can you tell me:

What is it made from (looks like thin hollow-block cement bricks)?

I imagine you would need to take care to tie the bricks together otherwise the vertical jointlines between the columns of bricks would open up: How did you do that?

Did you have to seal it given that the bricks don't look particularly thick?

rotflmao for a hijacked thread - i'd say its prob not healthy for that to be part of their diet (though likewise for us) ;) but i second or third a followup of more info on that tank design!

Thanks for the photo's Ao+, beautiful, ingenious-looking tanks, growbeds, and system.

Are there really no rods or wires to stop the tank from splitting vertically along the vertical lines of mortar.

One of the early shots shows a stack of the bricks on the ground and it looks like there might be a sort of interlocking vertical profile on the bricks that might help tie them together vertically: Is that right?

They're handsome fish Ao: What species?

My compliments once again on the system: Are you happy with it? What has grown best?

Hi fishtopia
There are 10 mm iron wire in the floor, concrete reinforcement.
But on the wall it just mortar with only 1 round of 10mm iron wire.
On the bottom, buried in the ground soil pressure will hold the bricks together so no worry.
On the upper part of wall is pressured from water. So I put a ring of wire on the bottom of the upper part. That 's all , no interlocking, no vertical reinforcement wire.

the strength seem to be no problem but leakage. I have to paste cement to coat the inside wall to protect leakage.

The fish in the tank are tilapia and a kind of Thai local fish, i don't know how to call in English.
No planting yet because Thailand this year has rain all the year. So I have no chance to change the old rooft to plantic. I think it will be soon this winter.

Of course I happy with the system. AP is very addicted. I have been lerning a lot.
Once you have AP system you will find time during the day visit your system looking for happyness. Ha Ha.

Fat is good for fish.

I have a manual on building brick farm dams provided free from the cement and concrete institute of South Africa. It states very clearly that only solid cement bricks of 14 mpa should be used for cement dams to avoid leakage problems and ensure longevity. Wire reinforcing of 4mm can be used and more reinforcing is used at the bottom and progressively gets less and less as you build up as the pressure is much greater at the bottom. I could scan and mail you the info if you are interested Ao+... :wave1:

Oh!, sorry the wire should be 5mm not 10mm.

Ok. It may take a while as I need to scan it at my brothers place. I should probably check with the cement and concrete institute if they are ok with it but I don't see it being a problem as they post the book to people for free. I guess it is to encourage people to use more cement. I should finish the e-book on building cement brick aquaponic systems and send that at the same time.

By the way, if you just read my system thread you can see how i built my tank and growbeds. But it is a bit lacking in details.
