Hi everyone This is a sample of my SP, purchased in Feb 10, this guy is about 200mm (8 inches) long, they are doing really well, although there are a few runts in the tank, some only about half this size. I initially bought 50 fingerlings and 10 catties, so far only lost one (that I know of) Feeding them pellets and live worms from the worm farm. Questions: When are they big enough to harvest? Can they be baked/grilled whole like trout, or should they be fillettted? cheers Rodney

Hi Notable What size were your SP fingerlings when purchased? We steamed ours with Spring Onion and Ginger when they were "small plate size" - fishing catch "size" regulations do not apply when home grown. Best wishes - ColinW

I like to grow them out to at least 600grams then fillet them to get rid of the bones. Any smaller and the fillets are too small and fiddly. I chuck the frames in with the yabbies or use them to catch blue swimmers |

Hi Notable - cleaned and scaled. When steamed like we had - just eat flesh from top side... "frame" bones can just lifted away to consume lower half. Regards - ColinW |

I find Poh's Kitchen has a good way of preparing steamed fish asian style. Being Asian, if I'm hungry...any size is edible. But bang for buck....maybe wait until the summer is well and truly finished? |
