Procambarus clarkii , the Red Swamp Crawfish, is what we are used to seeing Dejavoodoo. Your right, I pulled one off a seine last week, it had a total length at least six inches long. I will try to shoot a picture of next one I see. Here is info I found on the largest USA crayfish....."At up to 9 inches from claw to tail, Barbicambarus cornutus, the crawfish state biologists have documented, is the largest of the crawfish here. They don't know how many there might be, nor how big the largest are here. " So maybe that is how the newly discovered species is measured. It is an interesting discovery. Most likely it will be labeled "endangered" which practically means you can't sneeze on one. Or even look for one. |

In Australia, (Victoria at least) for the "Southern rock lobster" we check for legal size by measuring from the back end of the carapice (Main body shell) forward to the base of the "Vee" made by the little horns in front of the eyes. A cray with 5" over this distance would make quite a meal! |

US Lobsters from New England are measured in the same manner from the rostrum (pointy part) to the end of carapace, where it joins tail segments. The newly discovered species is reported smaller then the Barbicambarus cornutus, I mention above. Yes it would be great to get some. Although I don' t they rival the size of those freshwater species found down under. |

There's many.. and a growing number... of people farming the Australian Red Claw... in the US... Red Claw, aside from the WA Marron... are one of the biggest freshwater crayfish in OZ... Here's a couple of links... http://aquanic.org/publicat/usda_rac/efs/srac/244fs.pdf http://farmingcrawfish.com/stick-fins-f ... mpany.html |

Dejavoodoo, Rupe has a great idea, and I think they are legal in Texas. I remember reading about a grower some where in TX. |

There were a few places in Texas... but I believe that it's now illegal to sell Red Claw in Texas... |

I would raise redclaw if I could get them...but I would really love to get a few breeding pairs of maron. I have the perfect spot for 'em too! That said though, I had some crawfish in the sump for a while, but they all ate each other. To get serious about it, I would have to rig something up to keep them seperated, but then how do you breed??? Someone posted some pictures a while back of a crawfish tank thing where each one was kept in it's own little compartment...it looked like a lot of work! |

Well crud... Apparently it is illegal to own them in Texas now I wonder if it is like owning tilapia where you can get a permit and then you are good to go... I think I am going to have to do some more research...
