I have just taken my trout out.. they were still eating but with hotter weather to come i thought it time to do the harvest.

I have 4 big silvers in the pond now with 2 algae eaters but i dont want more silvers.... had a bad run with barra last year so not keen on them ...

hearing a lot about murray cod....... a farmer up in the wheatbelt has some and thinks he can get some out around early march... but what are my other options..

thoughts please.

cheers steve

Steve if you are going to translocate Muzzas make sure the relevant permits are in place as the consequences of getting caught without them dont bear thinking about . Its way easier to do trout in WA than Murray Cod .
I have a mate out Beverly way who has a couple of dams with them in and even allowed to take one out and over to his house for dinner , fisheries constantly monitor him and others and have told him that if any cod leave his property they will poison his dams to remove the fish .
Ridiculous really when you think they stock ferrals like trout into southwest rivers seemigly without a care but if you want to keep Aus natives (allbeit east coast ones) you are treated like a lepper.

I thought you were going to have a go at getting them thru the summer!! What temps did your water get to??

The difference is Prawnz that the Trout fishery in WA is pretty much a put and take fishery as natural recruitment is negligible. If fisheries wanted to they could stop stocking Trout and the fishery would cease to exist in a few years time in most waters. If Murray Cod find their way into our waters they will breed much more easily and you wont be able to remove them, much like the Redfin are at present. Being such a large fish they will also be at the top of the food chain and decimate the native Marron population and damage that recreational fishery. Its going to happen over time though as its been reported in the WA Trout Association magazine that Murray Cod have already been caught in Waroona Dam!

Yeh I get you on the Trout petering out but I'm just not sold on the Murray Cod taking over line. I know this has been used as a reason for not stocking them since the year dot but despite attempts to stock them in the past , both legitimate and clandestine they are still practically non existent . They have been stocked in the Avon , Canning , Murray and there is the Grassmere thing yet still they dont abound . :dontknow:

I reckon Murray Cod are going to be a be a bit like Golden Perch - boring. Ambush predators aren't much fun to feed. In fact golden perch were damn near impossible to get to eat.
