I have the above mentioned plants in they have flowered and developed small berries but not grown at all. Stunted I would call it. Everything else is fine, the lettuce could get a move on but ..... ( fish still living ) |

Did you pollinate them, either by hand or bees? |

We always got small strawberries... it was like they ripened before they could grow. |

They have formed small fruit about the size of the gender sign on the forum page ( this I am using for a guide ) but have not got colour except green ... and leaves are ok but nothing else. |

There are so many varieties of strawberries available they may be a small, sweet variety. Where did you get the runners from? What variety is the plant? Strawberries send off runners and many of them, you want to use plantlets that are closest to the parent plant, not a plantlet that is on the end of the runner. You also want to make sure if you are dividing or propagating that the original plant was good stock in the first place. Potassium is required for fruiting and flowering and may be defficient in your system, just a thought. If this is the case there is a product called Eco rose which has organic certification in Australia. It is food grade potassium bi-carbonate- it is a wonder product used also as a foliar spray to combat powdery mildew and promote fruiting and flowering (improves sweetness too I think). It has an ability to raise ph in a system so be warned not to add large amounts to the fish tank. The thing I like about foliar sprays is that the plant absorbs through their leaves so you don't have to use a lot in a spray bottle. |

Bunnings and name I don't know. I am going to put plastic bottles over the plants to make a semi hot house for them what do you think? Just to raise the tem for them. I don't want to start with the sprays we have been enjoying having fish don't want to lose any more. |

you could try seaweed extract, I understand that has potassium in it too and isn't acidic...? |

not to happy about trying to add junk. But the sea weed sounds ok I want to add more fish and plants later and this is our first shot at aquaponics. Peas we are harvesting and some herbs but everything else is slow I think it is the weather. We have not had to may hot days in Perth and and are awaiting our water free hot summer when we will then produce stuff I think |

Patience is a big part of it :] Got to be giving them what they need. Test water and up the feed slowly according to test results and you won't lose any more fish |

Bananas have lots of potassium. Some members had pretty good success with adding banana skins for strawberry yield. I think they actually went for organic bananas to reduce the chemicals they introduced into the system. Oh yes and the skin will break down over weeks so don't bother removing it... |

In my experience cold weather will result in small berries What PH is the system? Nutrient lockout may be an issue |

dido to everyone saying that cold weather produces small berries. as the weather warms, the berries will go crazy! I have still been doing the bannana thing when the family gets a need for them (usually once every 2 weeks - more than enough to bury into the beds). We have three varieties going at the moment, red gauntlet, lowans and hokowase. Also have a US variety - don't know the name, but the fruit is meant to be firm? My strawberries are flowering like nuts, and also have small friuts on them. I am hoping they will start to get bigger as the weather warms. also have a set of crowns in the wicking bed. interesting to see which produces more... |

My strawbs are doing better than they ever had in the dirt here. But thats not hard cause I dont thing I have ever got a fruit. Had one green fruit that was getting to a nice size , then it just dissapeared. Got some sort of critter in the greenhouse. Hitting the flowers with the electric toothbrush that I use in the greenhouse for the tomatoes. Hope it helps the strawbs but not sure |
