I keep hearing you people talk about these fish and i dont know anything about them what are the advantages to other fishes?? and are they easy to farm??

Well others would know more as i have not really been reading into them (because cant have them in SA) BUT they are prolific breeders and fast growers, so you could breed your own rather than keep buying fingerlings.....Oh and they are aparrently tasty with delicate white flesh......hope this is all true...

Hey FP, Tilapia are one of the most widely produced fish in the world when it comes to aquaculture, as Daniel said they breed easily and they're fast growers, which of course also puts them into the "pest" catagory in many situations.

They do require warm temperatures, so down in Albany you would need some good heating to keep them, this is the major downfall of trying to grow them in the southern areas of W.A.. Mine are in an aquarium with a heater, though I may put some outside for a while over summer now the water temperatures have come up..

Tilapia die under 50F (10C), and breed/grow best at about 85F (30C).

if you use the search box and do a search of the forums ..

there is so much info on this fish ... not hard to keep ... and If I lived in Albany ... I would keep a little breeding stock heated over winter and feed them like hell as soon as the temperature gets up a bit ... Mine like 25 deg C!

For environmental reasons I would not under any circumstances put them in a dam in WA.

But in tanks, big tanks! (no problemo!)

Lethal temperature for tilapia is about 98F (37C).

Johnnie, given your recent deaths in high temperature, increase aeration. Warmer water contains less dissolved oxygen.

Thanks for the feedback.

I sort of guessed that Oxygen was the problem ... (I hate losing fish - and it happens very VERY rarely!). (I think I have only lost about 10 fish in one year!)

So I have reconfigured my filter / aeration system to allow more bubbles at deeper depth. (both from an extra air pump and from a higher drop - discharge from the filter bucket!)

At the moment I am yet to figure a neat way to connect the wheelies up to grow vegetables. No prob, just trying to figure the neatest way!
