Does anyone happen to know where to buy silver perch in Sydney?

I want a really small number, <10 I reckon, for a little test system.

Or is anyone ordering up big & might have a few spares?

Have you considered Jade or Golden Perch.....assuming that temperature is not an issue? It might expand your chances of getting onto something.

Incidentally, I've recently read again that Golden Perch grow faster than Silver Perch.....and that Silver Perch are better suited to farm dams where Golden Perch are better suited to recirculating systems.

Having eaten both, I prefer Golden Perch......fewer bones and better taste.

For the record, I currently have Jade Perch.....but I'll be gearing up to keep some some Golden Perch in the future

Hi Ell, I'm keen on the eating aspect, as I expect there may be a break between the test system and the proper system (while I move house, possibly city). I'd also like something my family agrees is edible ... that's why I'm not going for catfish

Gary, Jade or Golden Perch would be fine, assuming they won't mind Winter here ... gets down to 0 (but not below) air temp wise some nights.

tandanus tandanus aka "jew fish" "cat fish" are touted as one of the nicest eating fish, they just look ugly!

I haven't personally tried them yet though.

ok, so you get a few silver perch and a dozen catfish. silver perch are for show to the family, and once the cat fish is cleaned and cooked they won't know. Then after months of them eating it, you spill the beans...............

catfish are YUMMY! They have a reputation for tasting muddy, but IMO from an ap system they would be great.

The BIG problem with both Golden Perch and Catfish is that they dont readily take pellet food. I have had catfish in tanks that will feed on baby yabbies or worms.

Red Swirl, I bought 5 silver perch from my local dollar save pet supplies store for $2.50 each which isn't much if you only want a few. I live 2 hours north of you at Port Stephens so Sydney prices are probably double that.

For the record, there is a NSW Fisheries Research centre 5 minutes from my place that has aquaculture breeding and grow out facilities so when my system is set up I am going to approach them to see if they sell fingerlings???

p.s I am sure any decent local pet store will order some perch for you if they don't have any in stock

Went passed the aquarium yesterday (it was next to my first job) i can't look at their prices seriously anymore. electric yellow chiclids were $30 for ones half the size of mine, and the silver perch 8cm long were $7.50

All i can think of is the mark up on the other fish, but i understand they have a biz to run
