Greetings...

I have some Bettas, carp, goldfish, cat fish and zebras at home at the moment... I have around 6 Bettas and was wondering... As a demonstration system... if I put a betta in the aquaponics system would it be able to provide for at least one plant or the plant would have nutrients deficiency???

If anyone knows please let me know. If not ... well we will be figuring it out...
:D

Well the question you are asking is very vague. I would suggest that if you are new to aquaponics, spend some time reading the Useful Information and Basic Information part of this forum.

In short, to answer your question, any fish would produce ammonia for the nitrification process. However it depends on the size of your system, one fish may not produce enough ammonia for good plant growth. It also depends on how much the fish can eat and how fast the fish can grow, because in AP, you want the fishes to produce waste. The bigger the fish the more they eat the more waste. The quality of feed is also important. Aquarium food is generally formulated for minimal waste.

Supporting plant growth is another matter. What plant? Some plants will require more nutrients and micronutrients than others. As a minimum you need to see nitrate reading from your tests.

So as I said above, your question is very vague.

Fish Vases went through a bit of a fad a while back, the ornamental plant possibly doesn't need as much nutrient as a hungry fast growing vegetable, but the theory is there, so it would be worth a go.
