I read this here ...

http://www.nswaqua.com.au/information-golden-perch.html

Quote:
One of the greatest advantages of Golden Perch compared to Silver Perch is that they do not need purging. You can catch them straight out of the ponds and eat them. That is very important to people growing fish in their farm dams who just want to catch a few today to eat tonight, or to the commercial aquaculturalist which makes their life a whole lot easier with no purging.

Purging? Is that flushing their poop out by not feeding for a few days ? I haven't seen this discussed here.
I'm soon to get some silvers and have no idea what this is about.

anyone know anything about this?

Ignore it Bullwinkle... the information relates to blue-green algael managed aquaculture ponds/dams....

Off flavours are caused by the algae.... doesn't happen in AP...

Silver Perch just happen to be more likely to take on off flavours than some other fish...

You can "purge" the gut of your fish by not feeding them for a couple of days.... but, as you presumably don't eat... and discard the gut & contents... it's not really necessary...

thanks for that

there is a lot of info thats out of date or just plain wrong ... I read somewhere that nobody has tried growing silvers in tanks yet ... and that was from an oz government site

you would think they would take last decades stuff down... or at least introduce it as archives

thanks again

The guy in gigi who sold me my fingerlings said that he does not purge the silvers that go direct to the restaurants

The info is correct, including the "no-one has grown Silver Perch in tanks".... from an aquaculture perspective....

In Oz... there are very few RAS operations, and those there are tend to focus on Barramundi... or other fast growth fish species

I'm not aware of any commercial RAS Silver Perch operation... they're all done in pond based aquaculture...

And pond based aquaculture is based upon algael bloom management.... hence potential off flavour problems...

It's actually an industry standard... that Silver Perch be "purged" before sale... especially in fillet, or whole "chilled" form...

Not sure if the requirement extends to "live sale" to restaurants...

I thought 1/4 of the people on this forum were growing silvers to plate. Am i missing something???

Googling RAS... brb...ok

Im about to buy my first batch of silvers so I'm pretty interested in this thread :)
but I thought running your FT water through GB's was commonplace in this part of the world
and I thought running silver perch was almost as common

Yes... there are many people, including myself, that are growing Silver Perch in aquaponics...

And yes you say that aquaponics is loosely a RAS operation....

The point, and the related information.... concerns the "commercial" production of Silver Perch... as in commercial aquaculture

Until the last 5 years, nobody had really heard of aquaponics... and very very few academics have ever studied or reported on it...

For that matter... it would be just as true to say that (certainly up until now)... nobody has ever produced Silver Perch commercially in a RAS operation.... including AP....

Yep, there's commercial growers, and then there's those of us that do it for fun and growing your own food.... Two very different buckets... :)
