It sure was chilly this morning in Perth. Almost caught a cold going to the backyard to feed the fishes. Those who have had barras in the system last year or those who know, any idea when (which month start/end) did the temperatures get low to a point that keeping the barras longer in the system would not make them grow much bigger because they are not feeding as much?? This question is in relation to Perth weather conditions. Thanks... |

Oldute, did you buy them from golden ponds?... which size did you buy and what size (weight) are they now?? I have not weighed mine since I put them in, but they have definitely grown... |

Ivan I bought my 12 Barras the same day as you I think or a day apart. The three I took out last night were 400g, 410g & 418g. All the rest are smaller but hopefully they will reach 400g before it gets cool. I found them easy to fiillet with hardly any waste and therefore got good size fillets off them. Eating them tonight, havent had Barra before so cant wait. My ammonia has always been a bit high so I couldnt feed them as much as I would have liked as I had to stop for days at a time. They were easy to catch with a net, approach them from the head, not the tail. Bigger is better but I'd be quite happy with 400g fish. |

Thanks OU. Hope that they will be good eating... I bought some barra from the markets a while back, it did not taste so good... maybe it was not fresh... hopefully those in my tank would taste much better... |

They say its excellent and a lot of restaurants have it on the menu. I am fussy with the type of fish I enjoy so I'll tell you what I think of it tomorrow. Favourites for me are Flathead, Bream, Dhufish, Pink snapper, whiting & shark & now trout. Wont pay the huge prices for some fish as it spoils the taste! |

We've had a few people in the shop from "up north" and most of them don't like barra, they reckoned they are crap fish.. But I guess those up north are rather spoiled for choice. I don;t like to try and put a date on when they come out... I mean look at the trout, last season we had them out in late November, this year we still had trout in at late January early Feb. |

With the Perth forcast as it is, you have at least another week... |

Ate the Barra last night. Beautiful eating fish, dont know how anyone can say they arent. I skinned them at the request of the cook and she crumbed them and shallow fried them. Delicious and 3 approx 400g barra were plenty for the 4 of us. Looking forward to the next lot. Water was 19 degrees this morning but more hot weather coming our way. Fish still hungry. |

Barra are great! We have been scooping up the odd few at feeding time for dinner, yum! Last year we certainly noticed that when the water temperature dropped, they went off their food so wouldn't have continued to grow. That was when we took them out, and a week or so later put the trout in. We are just finishing off the last of the trout from the freezer....ready to make room for this season's barra! An endless supply of fish is great! |
