Post subject:  Silver Perch and Trout

I have just harvested my last Trout and rang the fish farm in Gidgegannup to enquire about Silver Perch. The guy there told me that it would be best to get the Silver Perch in early January. But I want to go back to Trout when they become available in April. So my question is:- Would the Perch grow big enough between January and April to be worthwhile harvesting or should I go dormant on fish until the Trout become available and forget about the Perch?

Or could I put Perch and Trout in together? This seems a risky business to me as I'm sure that one will eat the other!!!!!!

I got my Trout up to 600 gms this year and they are my fish of preference.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Got know idea why he would have said it would be best to get them in January... other than that's the time when the new season spawn will be available...

No... fingerlings in January will only be 40mm at best.... by April, you'll be lucky if they're 150mm...

No the Silvers wont eat the trout... they wont be big enough.... the trout might not eat the Silvers... but they'll sure as heck harrass them... and probably out-compete them for feed...

Ok - It seems that I should not mix the Perch and Trout, perhaps put a few goldfish in to get over summer until the Trout come available in April. I have got veggies growing so I will have to find some type of fish to provide ammonia and then clear the tank before the Trout come.

He said that he only had a few there now, that most were to fill orders, and that if the weather stops messing about and gets hot then he will have fingerlings in January.

I got my Trout from Gavin at Pemberton. I only started with 30 so they had plenty of room to grow in my tank.

This year was a learning curve; I had battles with algae most of the year until I solved it - just cover the tank up!!! It didn't seem to worry the fish. Also the ammonia spiked up really high but again, it didn’t seem to worry the Trout.

Roll on next year

why not try Barra

Too expensive, and they wont reach full size.

Growing Bara and trying to keep the water warm leading into winter will only affect your Trout growing time.

I thought of Barra but as pointed out, I won't have enough time to grow them out in the warm water of summer. As it gets colder a little bit earlier than Perth but seems to get warm about the same time, I can get good results with Trout or another quick growing cold-loving fish.

So its goldfish to keep the mozzies in check and then chase the little buggers in April to clear the tank for Trout.

Thanks for the help and discussion
