Post subject:  What Causes This Behaviour In Trout
When first introduced to a tank, trout have been known to jump out over the first night...

And last night, after the dramas of yesterday .... http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum ... 04#p210404

The same thing occurred....

Troutman (I've PM'd you).... as the resident trout expert... can you explain what triggers this behaviour???

Is it a sudden change in water parameters... like pH, clarity, temperature... perhaps simulating the "fresh" of a flood.... that triggers some sort of migratory or spawning response....

Or just the fact that they're in a new body of water.. and some curiosity to explore the boundaries of their new environment.... :dontknow:

Curiosity ?

One wondered what was out there ( Carl Sagan of the fish world ) and then the second one wondered where the first one went, and so on .......

Hmmm Calling Trouty???
I know that Gav has 250 good reason to have all his fish covered...
I recall hearing that many jumped at the same point in about 10 mins I think. :roll:

Silvers in a new tank will jump if there are bubbles near the side. Some fish think they are in a hole.

Wow! I usually only get one jumping at a time - for that many to go it must be a migratory thing.

They just die though, not go jumpy :?:

When Trout get sad they just keel over, I only see them jumping out of tanks chasing food / bubbles.

Freshly filled tank, would it have bubbles on the sides? If a group of them headed for some moving off the side.

My fish often jump near the water return, possibly hoping to colonize another pool upstream. I have mine pretty well covered, but DW just found a dried trout fingerling under a cushion near may aquarium.... :oops:

Mine too, always at the return. The two ways that seem to stop them doing it are: putting a sock over the return. The water then just trickles down the sock and I assume to the fish it looks more like a dribble coming down a rock wall rather than a torrent they can jump up, or secondly just covering it up with shade cloth.

Yeah, they did that the first night... but not since... and this lot actually jumped over the end by the drums... not by the return... AFAIK...

Regardless.... they hadn't done so for months... and I'm curious as to why THAT night... and THAT many... :dontknow:

Hi RupertofOZ,

I think it's the water temp and less air [D.O] means their looking for a better place to live.

We have nets over the aquaculture system to stop jumpers. There are 100 trout left in the tank and temps are 26 deg C, even though they have heaps of air they are keen to find cooler water if they can.

Perhaps it's like why whales beach themselves.
Most ppl would just buy nets and not think about it again. I admire your persistence for the reasons why AP is what it is.
