HSM = Holy Sh1t Moment. Sorry to hear you had to learn the hard way what this means.

I once pumped all but a couple of inches from my fishtank, so my system is now safeguarded against doing it again. "Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it." Edmund Burke (? I think Winston Churchill also mentioned it ? ) Even though you have suffered a catastrophe, try to learn from it. There isn't any need to rush back and do something stupid along the way, like completely refilling your system with heavily chlorinated mains water and killing the bacteria remaining in your system, because then you'd have no fish and no bacteria which will eventually result in no plants too!

I agree with F&F, it might be a little late in the year to start over with trout. Having been through a few SA (Adelaide) summers, I think you'd be more disappointed to get young trout now and have them die in a month when it gets hotter. You might be able to borrow some almost grown trout until the end of their season then move over to another species? You could even go without fish for a while and use hummonia (pee) or another ammonia source until ready to get your next fish, this will keep the system cycling and the plants growing.

It's a good opportunity now to look over your system again and see if there any other potential points of failure that haven't got a contingency.

Again, I'm sorry to hear about your HSM.

yep, no way get trout now. our water temps here now are very trout unfriendly. As with previos posts, we have a few 8 - 10 cm silvers avail at $4 each. I have someone coming tomorrow afternoon to pick 30 up, would be easy enough to catch a few extras out if required.
