Post subject:  Trout vs tank size
At some stage I heard that fish size is constrained by the size of the tank. I did not believe it but I am beginning to wonder.

Does the size of the tank effect trout? I have a 1100L tank volume with 2 trout left from last year I am not sure how big they are but I don't think they are eating as much as I would have expected. The water tests are fine and they are eating still, but compared to they new ones they seem disinterested.

Yes, fish size can be limited by the volume of water they live in. This is one of the ways that hatcheries hold fish at a smaller size, by keeping them at high density. Feed availability, oxygen levels etc come into effect.

Although this is not true for some fish that actually grow faster (schooling fish like some trout and char etc) and show less aggression to each other at greater densities. There is off course an upper limit.

Novaris, I would say that the reason those fish are not eating much is that being over 2 years old they are probably in spawning mode. You will definately get faster growth rates with your younger fish as a lot of energy is spent developing eggs/milt in a trouts second year of life. The flesh quality also suffers somewhat which in my opinion is another reason you are better off harvesting your trout before the first summer.

My 150 trout spread between two IBC's are the same size now as the fish that I grew last year, and they are in much smaller tanks. They are gonna be monsters :)

Same here i have 50 in each ibc they are already eating size

i managed to get my trout to around 800 grams by late November last year in a 500 ltr fish tank that is part of a 1500 + ltr system, this year i think i will do better though simply because the system has aged a little more.

Hey that's pretty good, I'm going to be happy with 500 grams, though even that's looking a little bit optimisitc.
