Post subject:  long finned eel suppliers?

I am trying to source a supplier of glass eels (long finned) in Southern NSW (or close enough to) for use in AP. Seems like eels as almost as tough as goldies and there is a ready market at good prices in the live trade to the Asians/restaurants.
Google gave me a few leads but no responses to emails as yet. Searched the forum, but no suppliers mentioned. Any ideas? Even interstate suppliers may be able to point me in the right direction.

Forgot to mention that they transport well and the live trade gets around all the food safe legislation. Current prices are $14+ a kilo whole - head, guts, the lot.

I heard Bill Mollison cite a Japanese (translated) book on raising eels. I'll have to go back and see if I can find it.

And just how do you propose to keep them in a raft system....

Electro shock therapy
A small current run though a wire on top of the plastic lip works wonders.
Even works on snails :P

Eels have been done in aquaculture for centuries, possibly millennia in China, and in recirculating aquaculture here for decades. I think they may have solved those escapee problems, and I don't plan on reinventing the wheel this week.

But I wasn't planning on running them in with the rafts, just the FT's. I would assume some sort of easily removed and swapped and cleaned screen would be the go, or perhaps an in tank division of some sort to keep them out of the inlet/outlets, but I'll wait and see. It appears that a vertical lip of 100mm keeps em in or out.

They look really interesting. If you find a supplier I'd appreciate it if you could give me a yell.

Me too. I loved Footrot Flats. Don't know if I'd swim with them tho.

Steem, that's them. I sent Rob who wrote the article an email, but no response yet. When I find a supplier(s) I'll post all here incl. prices etcetera.

Duff, a friend has them in his dams and tells me they "nibble" his toes. Given they are carnivorous, grow to 1.5m, and 20+kg, you won't find me swimming naked in his dams! Horrible visions of a diminished manhood come to mind

McFarm... swimming in any of the dams down your way would result in such diminished "manhood" that the eels probably wouldn't be able to find it to nibble on anyway...
