I've decided to have a play with some Yabbie's
I got about forty tiny babies a few weeks ago. They are going well, some are now about an inch long.
Question is ...
How big do they need to get before the little buggers start munching each other

Cute - is that duck weed on the surface of the water?

keep them well fed and not crowded and they should be right. also keep them at a higher rather than lower ph 7.5 at least with good calcium, and they will have no trouble with their moults which they do frequently at a small size

frozen and thawed veggies (so they sink) are good. they eat just about anything, sometimes waiting until it breaks down abit.

I use to throw in raw carrot when I had redclaw in my home aquarium. They really chew it down. THey are funny little buggers. When they get bigger they will grab a bit of carrot and run off with it. THey are fun to watch. Make great pets.

I've been having this crazy thought. Crayfish/yabbies seem to stock by area but fish stock by volume.

When crayfish densities get too high, they lunch on each other. Would it be possible/practical to have a tank of the critters in a vertical separation method - similar to 'floors' on a building and increase density levels?

Ron

Probably should do a drawing and start a new thread on this one ..........

Entirely possible Ron... and many people use stackable yabbie trays for that purpose...

These are how it's often done for prawns and yabbies...

Not sure how they compare to the Edu-Cells cost wise... but trays aren't cheap though...

You do realise the little buggers are great escape artists? :)

i've found that if you have the water parameters to their liking they pretty much stay put. unlike fish the can "get the hell out" if the water does not agree with them :)
