Hello all,

I'm trying to thinking out side the box a little with yabbie and aquaponics.

Issues-
They need room.
They like there own space.
The will happily eat each other.
Don't really produce enough waste by themselves to solely contribute to a grow bed.
Don't need deep water.
Like to escape because they can.

So my design thought is this-

Could I make a yabbie wall?
Using something like plastic fish crates with with mesh lids to stop the wanderers and 3 mesh dividers in each crate. All the crates interconnected into the aquapoonics system. Water enters the top and works it's way down the wall through each crate (1 yabbie per section, 3 per crate, 16 crate on the wall/ frame)) and out the bottom in to the grow beds.

So to the question-

Is a third of a fish crate (600mmx 400mmx 150mm roughly- there are deeper ones available) with regularly flushing water enough space for yabbie friends to be happy and grow to eating size?

You thoughts are welcome and appreciated. I'm told Charlie is the yabbie king?

I dont know about yabbie king lol, Im a bit rusty not having done anything for many years.

I guess looking back on anything I tried you can definitely keep a bunch together in a standard AP system or fish tank. Just provide a heap of hides for them to retreat to when required. Sure you may loose some now and then but overall I think it will be fine.

I think at one stage I had trout, SP, marron and yabbies all in one FT and they did fine.

I mean, I used to get too caught up in yabbie per square foot and all that crap but just give it a go and learn from your trial and errors. No harm in that and its a bit of backyard fun.

The crate thing might work but feeding might be a bit problematic. Worth a try though if it interests you.

i'll flesh my idea and design out a bit more and see what i can come up with.


I found the below image- part of what I'm told was a commercial yabbie farm set up sold years ago. (no idea how it exactly work or what the blue baskets were or are called)

from my understanding looking at it it's incomplete as the little fellas could simply climb out of one crate and in into the neighbours home BUT if that was their living space then maybe my idea has legs?

I need plants ? Can I get away with just a filter and O2 ?
