Hey I'm From Louisiana and I'm starting a new aquaponics system as a non-profit in my community. I plan to use 6-8 IBCs in a 25×50 space and catch some fish from my pond or local ponds in the area. I know lettuce is good in a new system but not to sure what else grows well in a new system. I really would love some advice and tips from all my fellow aquaponist. Thanks in advance.

You'll probably have good luck with anything that isn't fruiting (green onions, broccoli, herbs, cabbage, etc.) Green beans also grow really well just on nitrates.

I imagine you'd be fine with like 1 fruiting plant per IBC too like tomato, squash, etc.

Hello!
I had good results with bok choy radishes, kale, garlic and chard when I started my system. Calaloo or vegetable amaranth also did well. Sounds like a fun project!
Basically, what TNPer said...fruiting stuff might not get enough nutrients, but you'll never know until you try. That's part of the fun.
Also, wild caught fish sometimes take months to actually eat pellets, so keep that in mind.

Are you in the warm winter part of Louisiana?? You might be able to do tilapia, which are usually pretty inexpensive for captive bred, and if you can catch them there, they would probably take your feed as they aren't too picky. People sometimes catch them around here with white bread, little bits of tortilla and the like.

Keep us updated!

I just re-read, and saw "from my pond", do you feed your pond fish with pellets? If you do, you're probably good to go.

What do you stock in your pond?
