I've recently discovered aquaponics, and after lots of research, I wanted to start a small-scale aquaponics system at home. I was thinking of getting a 10 gallon aquarium. What fish are suitable for aquaponics and can live in a 10 gallon tank?

Doesn't look like there are many native freshwater species there so probably you'd need something from the aquarium store and I'm not sure what's available there :dontknow: . Some types of goldfish might work but you'll probably find other choices that will stay small and work well, something you like and find interesting :thumbright: . Your choice of fish food makes a big difference. Most of the flake foods don't provide enough waste nutrients to drive an Aquaponics system so look for a good pellet feed that will work for the fish you choose.

Okay thanks for the advice! I will definitely try and find some high quality fish pellets!

We use bluegill. They've been pretty resilient. We feed them freeze dried worms since the pellets are a bit too big for them right now. But I'd only put a couple in 10 gallons. They grow to about 5 inches.
Try with goldfish first (they're cheap) and once you've got everything flowing and balanced, upgrade to a more permanent fish.
pH 7-9 on bluegill, 6-8 on goldfish.

I'm using for my small system goldfish. But when was started I was not sure that it's correct. But anyway, now I like the way it progresses. Thanks for sharing this info!

You could keep two goldfish in ten gallons if the water quality is good.

10 gallons is really small to be honest.

I think you and your fish would have a much better time if you could go at least 2x that size, or even 4x...

your water quality and nutrient base will be a lot more stable and you might be able to grow a meaningful quantity kitchen herbs, or a lettuce or 2, which i think would be pretty dificult to acheive with a 10 gallon aquarium.

guppys might be a good fish to consider for a small scale system.
