Post subject:  starting a fishery in a private dam
Hello members I am new to forum and I live in Tasmania. I have recently built a large dam on my property in the Launceston area of Tasmania. My interest lies with fish farming, which I have no experience and the government says I can stock with brown and rainbow trout. The dam is brand new lined with clay and is currently being filled by natural weather events. Max depth will be about 3.5 m some shade provided by trees. What is the process to stock with fish? Wait to dam fills and is there a maturing period for food growth. I look forward to any information that would assist with the early establishment of a fishery. Thank you :support:

You've probably already done this but I'd contact the Inland Fisheries Service and see if they have any information. This might be of some use on how long to wait before stocking - https://www.hyonahilltrout.com/faq.htm#newpond.

With a bit of luck someone who does fish stocking may check in and see your post.

Scotty435 thank you for your reply and information. It will be very useful and yes I have contacted TAS fisheries for info but your info is more specific. Thanks again

Structure in the water attracts insects which in turn feeds your fish. I listened to a great talk by Bill Mollison about growing fish where he talked about many ways to increase productivity in a dam with minimum effort. Creating areas of sticks/logs in the water where insects can breed, floating a raft of compost out onto the water cockroaches, slaters etc breed and some fall into the water. Just a simple smooth yellow float tethered out in the water attracts flying insects which then fall into the water..
