Cleaning out my RFF this afternoon I discovered about 20 little fry swimming around. I cleaned the pump housing and RFF out two days ago and they weren't in there yet, so these are obviously very newly hatched. I guess being so small the pump sucked them in and dropped them off in the RFF.

In any case, I caught the the fry and put them in a 5l bucket with some water taken from the FT. Apparently they don't feed for the first couple of days so I'll start feeding them tomorrow evening. I was thinking to simply powder some of my normal feed.

I wasn't planning on breeding with the fish yet (my system is just over a month old) so I'm a bit unprepared by these developments. Is there anything else I should be aware of or watch out for? Any other helpful advice and tips would be greatly appreciated.

My problems are only increasing. This afternoon I noticed a female with a whole bunch of fry swimming around her, but when I came back they'd all disappeared. I'm assuming they're back in her mouth. Question - do I leave her to be, or do I try to catch her and put her in a separate tank?

I think I can guess but you haven't mentioned what kind of fish these are?

Oops. They're tilapia (mossambiccus)

I've never raised these but maybe someone here has . My guess is to separate them if you can - some tilapia will eat their young - only the mother in the same tank initially might be acceptable since they've already hatched and it might be tough to get them apart. Providing some cover might also be a good option. Take this advice with a grain of salt and see if maybe someone who has these puts in some better advice.

Thanks. I was hoping someone would be able to give some first hand experience. Anyway, they died really suddenly today. I stirred up some of the feed powder that has accumulated on the bottom of their tank and guess that must've released some built up ammonia or something. I was able to save 3 of the little guys so let's see how long I can keep them alive for

What are you feeding them?

Put them in a different tank with mum & feed them plankton

I found a new batch of fry yesterday and was able to remove the mother to a separate tank. This morning the mother seems to leaning over to one side - is this something I should be concerned about?

Yes,did you use the same water from the system?
