Had a pair of blue yabbies for a few months now. They have their own IBC to live in, which I havent yet got around to filling with media. Once that tank is full of media i will move them to the sump tank. Used to throw them the occasional chook pellet or two when we still had chooks. To be honest though, haven't really fed them much in months. Will drop the occasional fish food pellet in there, probably only once a week though, and sometimes small pieces of silverbeet leaf get dropped in. Their tank is plumbed in, so I assume they get some leftover fish pellets from the main FT, and there is quite a lot of algae in their tank. Question is, do I really even need to make an effort to feed yabbies, or will they just live off whatever floats their way occasionally? Thanks |

I don't know the answer to this but I suspect with just one or two they can live off the biota in a mature system and at least survive. There may be times of the year when you have to feed them because there isn't any other food available and other times like winter when they eat very little and don't need any food added. |

I feed mine cut up raw carrot (older drier carrot will float) , Lupins if I have some (high in protein) . They will eat anything including each other |

I run a couple in each tank as clean up crew with fish. They go quite happily on the algae and excess fish pellets. They eat just about anything in the 'wild' so other than variety they are pretty flexible re: diet. chook pellets are fine as you note - usually cheaper than fish food. I would give them pellets or something at least once a week. |

Thanks guys. Guess they have been fine so far, so should be okay! Will throw in some of the suggested foods occasionally. Cheers |
