Post subject:  How Many Fish?

I've read the 1-inch per gallon rule, however I think that it applies to fish that are grown for consumption. I've converted a 20L Aquarium Tank (pic provided) into an aquaponics setup. I have an overflow box that drains to a 10 gal. aquarium with a submersible pump that gives a continuous flow to the box above. I'm growing strawberries.

Currently I have two otos, 3 black neon tetras, 4 neon tetras and a Siamese flying fox. I would like to add a decent amount more of neon tetras both black and standard and possibly more of different community fish if I can get away with it. So, that being said, how many fish could I be looking at so I don't overstock but provide enough for the plants?

Thanks for all the suggestions, they are all welcome and appreciated.

I am way beyond that density, like an order of magnitude, but still growing fish. I need to get rid of some more. Has your fish tank been cycling with just fish and now you're adding a grow bed? If so, you should be able to push it a bit more since you've added more filtration.

Don't listen to me though, I'm quite the novice.

Edit: what part of Indiana are you from? I'm in greenwood

In a mature aquaponics system I usually hear that 1 to 2 fish per 5 gallons is a low number for easier fish management. That is usually large edible fish too. I would be willing that every one of those fish are 1lb or more.

Just remember to keep your grow bed volume to fish tank volume at 1:1 for that.

Also, you may want to paint your top tub to keep algae at bay. It can cause problems.

If you get it going well... you will have an Ultra filter going for the fish... so you can hold much more than a normal fish tank. Pet stores will recommend the 1" of fish per gallon.
