Iv just built a IBC system as a herb/leafy green system, not fussed on eating fish thinking about just putting goldfish in, would 10-20 5cm comets get the system up and running?

Also should I use an aquaponic feed high protein?

I started my 300 gallon system with 10 feeder fish, then put 20 more in after a couple months.

I lost about 5-8 to disease and stress. The real killer was me not feeding them regularly enough. They started to cannibalize each other.
I fed them flakes till I put some tilapia in the tank. Then switched over to pellets (and made an automatic fish feeder).
The gold fish were eating the pellets just fine.

I eventually took out the remaining gold fish and moved them to another tank. There were 12 survivors.

10-20 goldfish are a good number in an IBC. The issue you have is that the fish get bigger quite quickly.
so initially your 5cm guys will not produce as much but as they get bigger (within 6 months) they will suit the system.
That is the one drag with a new system.

The alternate issue is that people buy a lot of small fish but then are way overstocked as the fish get larger quite quickly. so don't buy too many unless you have somewhere else to put them.

there is a patience aspect to AP - and it applies mostly in the first season when first getting started.

no. Goldfish don't go so well with high protein feed, particularly the fancier ones.
you want about 30% or so protein food to get growth, definitely less than 40%.

Your signature does not say where you are country/state wise (maybe update it).
Presume you are in Australia. In which case the Skretting 3mm Nova sinking is OK for comets etc.
It bulks for around $10/kg including postage from someone like IdealFish, with chunk of that postage !!
much cheaper than pet food suppliers etc.

---------------------------------
As you are not too worried then the uncoloured and plain orange comets are by far the best and hardiest.
Also the cheapest to buy. Shubunkins are also hardy options - look a bit fancier but cost a bit more.

**don't buy too many fish up front** as you need to go through cycling.
best is to buy a few and do the cycling and then get a few more.

also once cycled get a couple of cheap yabbies and throw them in with some hides.
They will help keep the floor of the IBC pretty clean of food etc. and live happily on the excess sinking pellets
you will only ever have a couple at most as they will eat each other.

as Tonzz notes above - worth telling us how you are configuring the set up.
Suspect you are starting out with a typical IBC flip system which would suit 10-20 GF's and is a good way to get going in AP.

Thanks for the great replys it's a Flip system however I cut a bit extra out to drop the overall height, put 250l of hydro clay today and 600lt left in tank space.

Will be cladding it on the weekend with marine ply.

10-15 goldfish will be fine. start off with 5-10 while you cycle (which will take a few weeks) and then add a few more. If need be read up about cycling here http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/guide ... f-cycling/ or else ask and we can help out with information. If you are using fish don't add anything else bar plain white seasol to the system (seasol in watering can on the plants - once a week).

you can edit your location in the User Control Panel > profile (on the left edge).
