I just started trying to breed tilapia for my aquaponics system, but i do have some questions. i posted a picture of the setup i made. Its a bucket with a pot and some pvc pipes in it. I also put one airstone in it for airation. I have no filter system on it. -Should i just put new water in every few day to keep it clean? -Do i keep feeding the fish? -how long before i get the first fry?

Best to let people know what kind of fish you are trying to breed with the setup you have there, otherwise it's pointless to ask the question. I can tell you that you need filtration and probably a larger setup for most types of fish. |

I'm not a Tilapia grower but this guy is - https://lakewaytilapia.com/tilapia-breeding.php. I'd start there if you haven't seen it already. From what I've read 65 degrees F is the minimum temp for breeding blue tilapia but around 80 is better. I know I've seen some people using good sized aquariums for breeding tilapia. |

I also recommend filtration, you want good water quality and you don't want to disturb the fish with unnecessary water changes. Tilapia also like a gravel bottom to "nest" in but probably not necessary. Temperature an pH are important so probably a heater, good filtration (fully cycled with established bacteria). I use a 55 gal aquarium with a penplax cascade 700 filter, 300 watt heater and gravel bottom. However, the fry will get sucked into most filters so watch out for that - maybe switch to a foam filter when you notice eggs in the females mouth until you net them out. Once the mother releases the fry from her mouth, I net them into a breeding net in the same tank and feed them high protein crumble. |

heating is not a problem here outside temperature is around 30 celsius. yes probably all filter system will suck up the eggs thats why i dont get any fry in my aquaponics system. |
