I'm having trouble getting my tilapia to spawn. I have 4 females of different sizes and 1 male in a 65 gallon aquarium. The largest female and the male immediately paired in his nesting area, but after a week and a half of sticking by his side and running off other females she has not produced any eggs. Water temp & ph are perfect. Any ideas?

Jmoudy77,

Here is a pretty thorough and specific guide to breeding Tilapia: Tilapia breeding guide.
Maybe it will help or point out what is not working as expected? :dontknow:

BTW, have you ever visited the Tilapia cages in Lago Nicaragua located at San Ramón on Ometepe Island? I can see the dual volcanos of Ometepe Island from Costa Rica when I take back roads over the mountains close to the Nicaragua / Costa Rica border, but I've never made it out to the island.

I'm pretty sure this is what the circles in the lake are in satellite fotos:

Somewhere I've got some great fotos of those volcanos rising out of the fog covered lake in the dawn's early light. Very enchanting... :thumbright:

Good luck with the match-making!

Hi Sam,

I had seen the guide you sent me the link to, and my setup is as it should be. I'm not sure what is going on. Every once in a while the ph will drop into the mid 7 range, but that's about it.

I have not been to Ometepe, nor seen the tilapia cages, but look forward to it sometime. Beautiful pictures of the volcanoes. We have several of the northern part of our volcano chain active right now. It will be interesting to see if Ometepe does the same. Let me know if you think of anything that may get the girls to start producing eggs!

Josh
