..
Something that I had not thought about, with the idea of mixing fish species..

Tandanus are a popular fish and I will, no doubt, try them soon.. but something that I had not considered, was the handling issues..

The issue seemsto be the toxins from the fin-spikes, that can cause severe pain.
I was aware of these spikes, but never considered one aspect, that was highlighted when I heard of an incident where an owner was nettng all his fish from a tank.. The tank had both Tandanus and Silver Perch.. all of similar size..
Without thought of any dangers, the fish were just netted and moved, but a great many Silvers quickly died.. :upset:

The lesson that was quickly learnt - catch the slow moving Tandanus FIRST, and never net them with other species, lest, they get spiked whilst thrashing in the net and DIE. :support:

It's an obvious problem, but not one you might think about, when doing maintenance.....

I foolishly assume that the Tandanus are immune to their own species toxins .. (please correct me on any points)

Having been swimming in the Namoi River in the 70's when there were plenty of catfish around, I can attest to how painful their spiky fins can be when they get you on the arm.

Ah yes, that was me

Anyway no leaks so far and its fun to watch the Tandanus. They have been endearing themselves to me over the last few months, kind of a laid back, docile critters, they never complain and look happy just sucking on algae. They've been in with the Silver Perch without problem, except when I try to net out some Perch you always get more dopey Tandanous in the net than the wiley little Perch. When they're all thrashing around in the net the Tandanus wreak there revenge and directly or indirectly poison the Perch, I lost about 30 Perch before I figured out what was going on. So they are going there separate ways (tanks).

Happy to report that since I separated them there have been no deaths when netting out the silvers.
