Hi Looking for a place I can buy fish , preferably Carp but I am also considering Orfe, in the Republic of Ireland It seems UK firms can't export to Ireland (not sure if that goes for N Ireland as well) Unfortunately the National Fishery in Roscrea no longer sells carp, which is a pity, so do the Irish members have any leads? Thanks

can trout thrive in a pond (As a total n00b excuse me if this is basic) My pond has a highly variable level, (between maybe 100-300 m cu) I caught several little troutlings locally and introduced them, but low water levels(low 02?) killed them off. In fairness I have improved the pond since, and levels have never reached the lows that killed them As omnivores, would I fatten more carp per unit vol than trout? |

Yes, in a dam / soft bottomed pond, carp or catfish will work much better than trout, trout grow best with decent amounts of exercise, they like to swim into a stream. I also find that although trout are a cold water species, they certainly slow feeding during the colder parts of winter here. |

Yavimaya wrote: do eels, you guys love eels. From what I understand, eel will go walkies, and will find your dam anyway.. Are.carp (Koi) common in the area... thinking what happens if there is a flood that flushes them into other water ways.. I mention KOI, because if you can find a local Koi enthusiast, you might introduce yourself and explain that you seek fish for Aquaponics, and ask if you can buy "Cull" They produce countless babies and then choose those with the best potential for colour.. The rest can be killed.. as food is wasted on them.. KOI, will take to poor conditions better than Trout.. But if trout is the wish... then consider if you can make.an.aerator.. eg.. a floating paddle-wheel splasher, and this could be worth building.. And a thought.. Carp/Koi.. and water temperatures .. what temperature does the pond get down to.. .. . |

I did get 20 or so koi from a friend, of various size and colour Unfortunately I also became part of the territory for an otter... We have definitely seen at least one (Fat Goldie), and so I'm hopeful that more than one have survived, but without seeing any it's hard to be sure |

Red Herring, So you're just using something simple like this, right? Attachment: fish-trap-bottle.jpg [ 46.98 KiB | Viewed 7921 times ] I'm planning on trapping tilapia with a net, and maybe using traps like this to catch me some plant engines. The only place that sells Tilapia around here doesn't like competition and then they only sell meat (filets). -- Sam |

The same, only a big water cooler refill. The larger entrance hole allows bigger fish in I have re-enforced with timber laths and used some lead weights to counter the buoyancy Baited with dry dog food I have used a 2l bottle as shown before , also to good effect |
