Each day I walk from work to the supermarket for lunch, and yesterday, I just stopped to look in the creek beside the path. I saw around 10 large fish in the creek, and was wondering what they were. the video is not the best, but any idea what they could be? I am assuming carp. . The great bit is towards the end. there appears to be around 10 or so schooling here. The weird bit is that they are in a suburban creek very close to the city(Melbourne). |

Quote: The weird bit is that they are in a suburban creek very close to the city(Melbourne). not really... been some massive carp/goldfish/koi in Perth particularly in the new estates that usually feature lakes as part of their stormwater systems - and they don't get there by accident.... Some people think its a good idea without any thought to the ramifications particularly when they get washed out into the stormwater systems. A while ago there was a heap of eel tail catfish ( Tandanus tandanus) from eastern Australia deliberately stocked into some lakes in a few suburbs and they got really large. Until now they have some disease issues and basically have created massive issues for a whole host of fish. there was a goldfish caught (electro-zapping ponds by fisheries) recently that was like a groper and the guy could hardly lift it. Appeared in one of the WA news streams. http://www.smh.com.au/environment/save- ... 2vcwk.html http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/holy- ... 1ulqd.html and I think " ignorant homeowners dump unwanted aquarium species" is BS, many of these are being deliberately stocked becasue people think its clever and nice, and there is a renegade group of fishing enthusiasts who are known to be deliberately stocking in cases. so guess it would be much the same in any big city...... |

Hard to tell if they are carp. http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/fisheries ... opean-carp That is what they look like, but can't see off the video if they are are. And they can grow very big! Good fishing for kids if you latch onto a decent one. But they must be killed and not returned to the water alive. |

They look like carp to me. The ones in the river where I fish do the same thing; hanging around together near the surface of the water on a sunny day rather than hiding from predators. Yours look the same shape and seem to swim the same way as the ones I see from the riverbank. It's always the big ones that hang around like that, the younger ones tend to hide a bit more |

That's a carp shape if ever I saw one. Can't get a decent shot of it but there is one at the start where you see it more head on and can see the width, unfortunately it looks carp-like. Attachment: fish1.jpg [ 39.22 KiB | Viewed 3795 times ] In my experience the ones that swim close to the surface like that are the hardest to catch, I swear they are just cocky and think they are untouchable, lol. |
