I am on the California Central Coast, Atascadero, where winter time temps can be down right cold! What is the lowest temp that trout can live in? I have fly fished them in Colorado and figure if they can survive a Colorado winter they should do fine here. Comments?

I believe they can survive in lakes and rivers with solid sheets of ice on top. So, 33 degrees or lower, easily.

They are "cold water" fish, not just "cool water".

If you're in california i'd be more concerned that your summers will be way too hot for trout. Something like catfish might be better suited.

Yes, I think summer temps will be more the problem in your area, they'll be fine in winter there.

They grow fast so go hard in the winter and hold off in summer

I'm pretty sure that water under ice is more likely to be 4-10c. I don't know what that is in crazy units but more than 33.

Ok now. With that all said, does anyone know of a good place to buy fingerlings?

Quote:
Anchor Ice – Occasionally when it is extremely cold, fast-flowing rivers can form ice on the bottom, called anchor ice. Sometimes when a stream is on the verge of freezing, ice starts to form on the stream bed. This can be very damaging, freezing to death trout eggs, developing trout buried in the gravel for a long winter's rest, and invertebrates that live in the stream beds and in the small spaces between gravel and rocks.
