So excited to harvest and consume my first ever AP rainbow trout tonight. They are not big, but they were beautiful to eat. I filled my system with water on 21 February and added 25 yearling trout on 28 March. There are a few too many trout producing too many nitrates for my plants to keep up with, so I thought eating some fish is easier than continual water changes. And I didn't even cry when I ikijimed them :flower:
Thanks everyone for all the great advice and encouragement that has got me to this point in my AP journey :notworthy:

File comment: The first 2 rainbow trout I scooped out - 27-29cm. There are some that are ~30cm, but I didn't want to stress out the fish by chasing the biggest ones

No its fine, its what the manufacturers put in the larger size pellets to get the pink/orange color in the flesh. When I picked up some 6mm Skretting last week from a large trout farm the owner said that he has a "color chart" from the manufacturer, he selects what shade of pink/orange he wants his fish and they make it up accordingly.
Its a great looking fillet so I was interested in what you've been feeding them.

Interesting.. and of a small concern... what is it that causes the difference in colour and of what health benefits or disbenefits..

Pharmaceutical companies would have us believe that feeding antibiotics to animals is good policy.. good for the quantity of meat produced but not for the health of the consumers..

So, can we call that deep red colour Astaxanthin, or just colour.. how good it is to give the grandkids red lollies just B4 you send them home. :support:

Astaxanthin.. the King of health. :notworthy: Red food colouring ... the height of revenge. :whistle:

Interesting. I was aware that a carotenoids were added but wasn't aware of their particular name. My supplier told me it is only added to the 7mm skrettings however I had been told elsewhere it was in the 5mm pellets also. It is also interesting that the trout farm gets to choose the coloured dye (which is essentially what it is).
Some other facts from wiki, aquaculture astaxanthin is synthetic (petrochemical), it was $5-6k per kilo 3 years ago, it constitutes 0.00001% of the pellet yet is 20% of the cost of pellets.
It is also an antioxidant and added to chook food to colour the yolks.
Well there you go I learnt something today, artificially coloured.

It is also used to help boost a fishes immune system, not just benefit of colour enhancement alone. I have been using it in my DIY food for many years.
