Post subject:  redfin babies help
i collected what i thought were tadpoles, but shock, was told they are red-fin, i have had them for about 6 weeks now feeding them fish flakes . the count is 35 of them, have air bubbler and filter and small stones on bottom of tank. can i keep them? do i need to do anything else? how fast will they grow? do they need greens?they are so cute and come up to corner when they see bright orange container of food. thankyou

You might as well keep them, the DEPI probably would prefer they aren't returned to the water. You are supposed to get a permit/permission to translocate Redfin, but given you already have I'm not sure where you stand in that regard.

I'd probably try to wean them off the flakes and onto a native pellet. Flakes have minimal nutrition and aren't really ideal for growth. Anything for Silver Perch is probably fine for them I'd say.

And if you decide not to keep them let me know, I'll take them off your hands. :) (That is if you are in the Wendouree in Vic ;))

Azira is right Helen,
you require a permit to translocate live Redfin.
I have one of those permits
As such, if you are looking to take them off your property legally, i will do so for you.
It is also illegal to keep them in victoria without a permit, and mine covers that too.
So, if you want them gone legally, please get in touch with me.
If you are caught with them, or releasing them, your in some trouble, sorry.

Since you have them taking flakes I'd get them onto a crumble and then pellets designed for silvers etc.

The Victorian DEPI have stated that you no longer require a translocation permit to take redfin home for use in an aquarium or a closed loop aquaculture system like aquaponics provided you are not selling the fish. You can't take them to another water source like lake, dam, river etc without a permit. BUT you will need to register your aquaculture system!! here is a link to the Documentation

Do not let them go into a public water way unless if was from the system you caught them from.

When did they change that Craig?
Best of my knowledge a translocation permit was absolutely required given their status as a noxious species.

Their status is not noxious pest here in Victoria... i was made aware of the recent changes as i also told people about a translocation permit that was required.

I don't know exactly when it changed but that document was brought to my attention October/November last year

They aren't listed as a noxious species anymore Porter. I contacted the DEPI recently and they basically said they can be moved, you just have to let them know. I have a link to the application form somewhere but I'd have to hunt around for it.

Keep them feeding on what ever they will eat and keep them coming to greet you.If you can keep them feeding they will grow quite well.I am feeding mine lanbs liver at the moment which I get for free.I had hundreds of them hatch but lost them ,I think for not changing the water enough but I am ready for the next lot.If you pm me I will send you some information on them if I haven't deted it.

yes i am in Wedouree, Ballarat. To be honest i dont even know if they are redfin, just a mate telling me they were, and i dont think are really growing much, can i give them blood worms as i have them in freezer, and i will get the pallets for them also

Can you take a pic of them and post it up, then someone should be able to identify what you have. There is a lot of difference between a Tadpole and a Redfin so should be easy to tell. Redfin are a difficult fish to get to accept flake feed where as tadpoles will eat it straight away.

They might eat the bloodworms but I'd focus on training them onto pellets if you are going to keep them long term. They wouldn't be growing much on fish flakes as they really aren't designed for growth at all.

Can you get a photo or two of them like Troutman suggested? The baby ones do look pretty plain but if you look closely you can usually see faint stripes on their backs. They don't usually get red on them until they are bigger from what I have seen.

all photos are blurry, more i look they are nothing like tadpoles, and should have turned into frogs by now. i will slowly get them onto the feed you reccomemed. thankyou all i am so glad i tried here. So one more question is i now know where there are millions of tadies, am i allowed to get some, although hubby says crap where going to
need another tank lol
