Any idea of what caused this on my silver perch? Lots of lacerations around the head but the rest of the body was fine. I have had the odd death twice in the last 2 months but none of them looked like this ![]()

Ick? I see lots of white spots on the rest of the body, the sores might have been where it was rubbing? |

+1. To ICK.. that image is exactly like a Barra that died and prior to removal, there was spongy white mucous/fuzz over those lesion areas.. Do you have the water salted..? .. . |

The damage around the head looks like it got its head stuck in a hole, and suffered lacerations on a sharp edge trying to get out, perhaps something on the SLO or something else you have in the FT? To me, the white spots don't really look consistent enough to be Ich. |

I've never really had Ich, so I'm only going off what I've seen, Gungulla might be right. Do the others have the white spots? |

Is the damage only around the head? Is not then maybe ick or something but if the damage is restricted to the head then I don't think so. |

If you have a close look at the injuries, you can see they are quite symmetrical on both sides of the head- that is a strong indicator to me that this is a mechanical injury from getting stuck in a hole of some kind, and not related to any disease. |

Quote: .... looks like it got its head stuck in a hole, and suffered lacerations on a sharp edge trying to get out, .... The bottom line - Is there anything within the FT that his head could fit in/get caught in.. I found this in the KSA Handbook.. Yes - it's for KOI, but hey, Fush are Fush.. ![]() Attachment: AP-KSA-Disease1.jpg [ 56.34 KiB | Viewed 5677 times ] Attachment: AP-KSA-Disease2.jpg [ 65.18 KiB | Viewed 5677 times ] Attachment: AP-KSA-Disease3.jpg [ 46.72 KiB | Viewed 5677 times ] ( KSA Handbook page 116+ ) To me, this suggests a process that we APers should follow, observing ALL the conditions around death.. Unfortunately, with some fish , it is hard to observe "Normal Behavior" My SP's are always skulking in the courner.. at least until they forget that I have my head at the hole.. There are many suggested treatments for various ailments, but many are inappropriate to AP, because of the use of questionable materials like Formalin.. .. . |

Attachment: AP-KSA-Disease4.jpg [ 19.73 KiB | Viewed 5675 times ] This is the most interesting part of the tables.. My Barra that died had areas of white slime, and if wiped away looked just like the above dead fish.. .. . |

The white spots on the body are just grains of sand from laying on a limestone block. My tank is not salted but I think I will start. I am having acid pH problems though, my system is quite acid pH = or < 6 Have added a fair bit of eco-fungicide , threw in eggshells but doesn't seem to budge the pH. |

gorotsuki69 wrote: I am having acid pH problems though, my system is quite acid pH = or < 6. Ummmmm... what did my last post say about High Acid, and areas without scales, which would have to be looking somewhat unpleasant.. and IF the measurement is given as <6, then that could be the whole problem.. we don't even know HOW acidic it is.. What about some BiCarb of Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) you must have some in the kitchen.. BUT - add it a little at a time measuring the pH.. Sudden changes can be as bad as Hi/Low levels Never done it, but I understand that you can get a better idea of the real value by pH by taking distilled water and diluting your sample 50:50.. but the distilled water must be completely neutral.. .. . |

.. FWIW... I just tried it using a "Yellow" sample, mixed with bottled water. 1mL of sample + 1 drop Indicator = YELLOW = 6 or less 1mL of bottle water + 1drop Indicator = BLUE = 7.6 Mix the two = light-green = 6.8 so you could get a better idea of just how acid, using a standard pH kit.. .. . |
