If you're located where I think you are, Lake Samsonvale is worth a try. Check just below the water line and walk around, hopefully you'll see just the corner of a shell poking out of the silt. If the wind is blowing consistently towards you, over the water the little chop eats into the silt and exposes them a bit more. If the water level has dropped it's worth checking on the uphill side of any log/stump/big rock since mussels trap themselves and aestivate (go dormant) until the water rises again. I found a heap inside a tree stump that the last drought exposed. But generally in the shallows there will be a few. Here's a pic I found online of what to look for when hunting them. Often there is only 5% of the shell visible.

And keep in mind that chances are it will be illegal to collect them in the wild and take them home, check your local regulations. |

I'm certain that the regs are different in other states and territories but luckily for those of us in Queensland there is a bag limit of 50 and there is no minimum size. ![]() I'd never even considered the bag limit for them until you mentioned that EB, pretty relieved that I haven't been doing the wrong thing over the years collecting them for aquariums and for use as bait. |

Cool..... Lucky you. I know that here in W.A. they are protected and for memory were on an endangered list.. And as fisheries tend to monitor this forum, we need to make sure members are doing the right thing. |
