If you're located where I think you are, Lake Samsonvale is worth a try.
Check just below the water line and walk around, hopefully you'll see just the corner of a shell poking out of the silt.
If the wind is blowing consistently towards you, over the water the little chop eats into the silt and exposes them a bit more.
If the water level has dropped it's worth checking on the uphill side of any log/stump/big rock since mussels trap themselves and aestivate (go dormant) until the water rises again. I found a heap inside a tree stump that the last drought exposed.
But generally in the shallows there will be a few.
Here's a pic I found online of what to look for when hunting them. Often there is only 5% of the shell visible.
