| Post subject: | Growing freshwater fish in Mediterranean climate |
Dear friends, I'm new to aquaponics and to this forum, but I have been collecting info here for a while now. Never late to register I'm about to start my first system, I will start small with a single barrel system, very similar to nat's system ->http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=11782 Once I feel comfortable with the principles and management of the whole thing, I want to go big. First things first. What kind of fish would be suitable to grow in Portugal? The climate here is typical Mediterranean, during the winter never snows and temps rarely go below 8ºc, the average is around 12ºc. During the summer can get quite hot in here, 35ºc plus is very likely to happen a few times per year, the average is 25ºc. I will start indoors with grow lights, so less variations in temps, but I want to grow fishes that are suitable to have outdoors, this way I will have some know-how about a specific kind of fish before enroll in bigger projects. Portuguese in general don't eat freshwater fishes, for traditional reasons only. If we had aquaculture businesses growing freshwater fish it would be easier to choose the right fish and know how to grow it. I want to eat the fish I grow, so gold fishes or carps are not of my interest. Based on my readings, it seems that most used fishes in aquaponics are natural to Australia, US or the Tilapia, to Africa. I'm not sure if some or any of those fishes would thrive here. Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance |
