Hi everyone,
I'm building my own aquaponics system for my year 12 research project.
I can't decide what type of grow bed media to use.
Whatever information you give will be used in my research project, which will not be published. If you want to remain anonymous say so in your reply.

Can anyone give me suggestions of grow bed media, maybe that you have used in your systems?

It can be anything really. As long as it is PH nuteral, doesn't leech anything into the water, anything works. It's the surface area that the bacteria grows on.

I've seen somebody on here using bottle caps.

Expanded clay balls are light and easy on the hands, but the most expensive by far.

Blue metal is probably the cheapest, but it's heavy and rough on the hands.

I just got a load of red scoria, and it seems to be working a treat so far. It's rough on the hands, only slighty more expensive than blue metal, and lighter than the blue metal.

I also use quartz gravel, and it works well.
