I had an email from Andrew at Aquaculture-advantage.
(Just to declare my interest, Andrew and I have many mutual friends although I have only met him a couple of times)

This is part of one of the emails:

Hi David,

Triploid rainbow have an extra chromosome so are neither gender. Instead of energy going into the production of sex products at sub adult stage the growth is transferred to proteinaceous production. Hence super growth curves from that age on. No they are not genetically modified, however, they are chromosome manipulated by pressure to 10,000psi to stop the eradication of the polar cell during embryo development, hence neither xx or xy but xxy.

These spare fingerlings would be $0.60 – 0.70 each due to their uniqueness and are varying between 55mm and 60mm last grade last week, they are 6 weeks old. They will be offered on a first in first served basis uncontracted. We have another 2,000 at 85mm plus from the same batch which will go out to ponds end of November at around 150mm shooter average. At this point, new hatchery runs will start for the season.

Triploid trout require same temps as Rainbow…. 17-19.c. optimum… stress at 22.c… lethal starting at around 24.c …minimum 10.c before fish start to go off their food.

We are considering doing a contract jade perch run of 60,000 plus for an interstate farm and would probably have 5,000 spare after shooter and middling grades are sent off. These will vary in cost per size as well as opportunity costs for localisation. Other species are available on contract basis. If we have firm orders and a deposit from your forum members we can provide superior service direct to door same day as packed with in-house vet certification. Combining the skills of Aquaculture Advantage, Veterinary Aquatic Services and Ornamental fish Products provides 35 yrs of combined experience in commercial fish production under the corporate banner of Omega Fish Products.

………

0885 243 962 business hours please.

Regards
Andrew

He told me in another email that he would do a good price for a bulk order of fingerlings of at least 1000 if forum members wanted to submit a combined order. At this time the offer is for silver or jade perch, but there are also the trout available (above) and in the future Murray Cod may also be available. I said that I would propose it to you all as I realise that there arn't many places in SA where you can get bulk orders and either pick up or have same day delivery.

If there are enough people interested then I'm happy to coordinate a purchase.

Hi KE,

Price dependant I would be interested in the Jades or Silvers, It's going to get a bit warm around here for trout in the next few months.

Anyway if you are willing to coordinate a purchase put me down.

ROZ it's available to anyone, but you might have to come to my place to pick them up.

Himzol if its silvers you want I know a bloke down in Meadows who might have some soon at 70cents each, we could end up going there if we dont get an order for 1000 as he'll sell in smaller quantaties

That's cool, I'm also interested in the trout - though I think they may struggle over the summer.

I think the trout are available in smaller quantaties and you could just ring him yourself. There's also plenty of the non-triploid variety available at Tooperang Trout Farm at Mount Compass.
I'm going to try and keep some trout over summer and see how they survive. I dont know how high my water temp will get as I only started up my system at the end of last summer. Make sure you keep blowing plenty of air in because that will (apparantly) help them stay alive when it warms up.

Gave this some thought and I think it would be wiser for me to go with the Silvers and Jades at this stage.. from what I've read they are a bit hardier and more tollerant of changes...

Can you believe I haven't even got a cycled system yet... sheesh

Hey KE-II ,

How are things progressing on this front ?

I've got the day off tomorrow and hope to set up and start cycling my system so should be ready for fish in some reasonable number soon.

Hizmol, forgive me if you've mentioned something earlier, but you do know that unless you're adding liquid gold or have fish nothing going to cycle?

Thank steve, your right I haven't mentioned it.

I've got a small pond in the yard which I will "take" some of the water from to help things along. Then I will be getting some feeder fish and yabbies for starters. These will live in the preformed pond which will serve as a sump - the main tank will hopefully hold the silvers when the system is cycled.
The reason I bumped the topic is that I didn't want it falling off the radar.

I hope to take some photos tomorrow and start a thread in the "members systems" area.

H.
