I have lost all my fish due to a nitrate spike.:(
I still have uneaten lettuce and am wondering if it's OK to eat still after fish were floating. Thanks ahead .

I'd do it. Not sure if that makes it the right answer, but I figure you should get some recompense.
Sorry for the loss Wenger :(

Well, I don't think I'd eat the root balls or rinse the lettuce in the fish embalming fluid, but the foliage should be just fine :).

Probably the ammonia or nitrite that got the fish. If it was nitrites then salting the water to 1 ppt with un-iodized salt can help (1KG per 1000L or 1gm per L).

+1 - what BenBrewcat said

Well it will be back to the drawing room and get back into things after this winter. They sure did grow a lot of lettuce for my family...

You could always keep the system running on something else like blood and bone meal along with some maxicrop plus iron - or get some more fish. Of course if you're wanting to redesign it and tear it down then you might need to stop for awhile. How big is your system and what region of the USA are you in? If it's pretty small the water might have gotten too hot for the fish. Not the best time of the year for lettuce in most parts of the US right now but give it a month or two depending on where you are.

Cheers

55 gallon drum system and I'm in region 4. I'm going to convert my garage into a aquaponic room 10×10. Then I'll be able to control the temp and maybe install some greenhouse panels. I also had a problem with my media I'll be changing out the pea gravel to hydroton.
