Post subject:  Spangled perch trial

I've just bought a 2nd hand single IBC system.
Should have it set up in 2 or 3 weeks I reckon.
With the single growbed I won't want to push stocking too hard so instead of growing out a small number of jades I'm pretty sure I'll give spangled perch a trial for a year or so.

I know they will probably grow slow and generally to a small size. I'm not really bothered by that at this stage.
I suspect I'll be fairly unscientific, can't be bothered buying scales to weigh food and fish but I hope I'll be organised enough to at least track fish length and volume of feed.

Since I'm honestly expecting no spectacular results I'll assume that they will be, at best, 2/3 the weight of a harvest jade perch. Assuming that (say 330g?) would 15 be a reasonable stocking rate for a 750L FT with 250L GB? (Volumes approximate right now). In reality they will be lucky to hit 200g but I like to assume a worse case than is likely so I have a margin of error.

Any requests on what/how I should share info and results?

ps I know this is probably pointless but for my first season with a small system a tough, hardy and local fish appeals quite a lot.
Oh, pics to follow when I get it up and running. :)

I suspect they have "Little-Fish syndrome".
I don't think putting a finger in the FT will be a good idea.
But that probably won't stop me doing it.

I have got about twenty of them ,they grew quite quickly for a start but seemed to stop now.The best thing about them is that they will stand from 5 to 44 degrees water temperature,so if you just want fish and don't plan on eating them they are a good idea.I will be keen to see how yours go.If you go on the internet and read about them There is a possibility that if you don't have too many in a tank they might get bigger in AP.There is a big difference in the biggest and smallest of mine and the gap is getting bigger.

Just wondering how the spangled perch trial went. In all my research on the spangled perch I know that you wouldn't want to keep anything else in with them or they would be consumed by them. I am wondering if you had any success with them in-particular in breeding with them. I am doing silvers this year but I am really interested in creating a more sustainable system
cheers

Thanks for the input Jaymie and Dbird, I must have missed that somehow.
Hi KrissyJ, I've put the Spangled perch trial off for the time being.
I ended up with 3 Bream in my FT to cycle and they're still in there for the time being.
Once my tax comes in I expect to expand my GBs and I'll swap out the bream for an aquarium species for around 6 - 12 months (I expect), after that I hope to get onto the Spangled trial.
I'll kickstart this thread again if or when I finally do. I'm still keen. :thumbright:

No probs.
If i get a second tank I will also be looking at spangled Perch. for the time being I will do my silvers for the next 12 to 18 months. Will let u know if i get a second tank fr my own trial. thats the best thing about aquaponics its all about looking at new ways. I have successfully breed yabbies in my 2 sump tanks. getting some Barcoo River Rainbow for my fingerling tank that has about 30 Mussels in their to hopefully allow the mussels a chance to sporn. the final part of the puzzle is breeding Australian Native fish in the fish tanks

all the best bodgy

How'd you go with this? (or anyone else who has tried the above)
