Post subject:  Joel's Silver Perch
In order to experiment with a new camera I have taken some photos of Joel's silver perch. I learnt a bit and will try again later some different angles/settings.Generally the best where no flash high ISO photos.

Hardware mine: Canon 400D, 50mm F/1.8 lens, circular polarizing filter
Hardware Joel's: Tripod, stand mount lights, fish

Also a picture of some plant which I can' remember the name of pulled out of tank to show it's roots. Joel what plant is that?

Note for next time. Scoop the bits off the water surface, set up lights in the other tank early so they don't get spooked

the plant is the much debated Lebanese / Yugoslavian / most other places water cress ;) tastes very nice :D

Nice one Gav, definately better without the flash.. We'll have to try and get the big ones in the other tank next week..

Notice how almost all of the fish are the same size, there's hardly any size disparity, except for one mutant fish that has a deformed mouth, he's much smaller than the others, and doesn't seem to be able to eat properly..

Good stuff B2. It's really tough to take photos of black fish in the dark. I didn't even try when I was at Joel's :oops:

Some ideas:
Your cam can do off-camera flash I reckon. If you've got access to a flash head, try holding it of to the side, 90° from the camera. Otherwise try the same thing with the stand mount lights.

If you've got control over the light like this, you might be able to lose the polariser, especially with on-camera flash (nowhere for polarised light to happen at that angle) - that'll help you get some more light in.

With the flash you could also probably get away with a smaller f-stop, maybe even 16, and lower ISO as well... mine looks really good at about 400, yours is probably way better. Canons usually are.

Without flash, you might be better with maybe f/4 and iso 3200 or even 6400 (just underexpose by 2 stops from 1600 and brighten it up afterwards).

Or try during the day :)

Tilapia are doing ok, I still have the breeders that I haven't been feeding much and this seems to have slowed down the crazy breeding, haven't seen the female with eggs for a couple of months now, even though the male keeps chasing her.. Still have about 50 young ones as well that are in a small tub outside and these haven't been fed much either over winter. I really don't know what I'm going to do with them as summer comes on, I need half a dozen more systems... :lol:

It does look crowded in those pics FF, but they are all bunched to one side of the take as they're a little camera shy.. Theres about 100 of them in the tank thats around 2000L, with most of the fish 350-450g I guess..

i spend to much time trying to take pics of my fish, most of the time i get a pic of the slime on my water and no fish. yours look good.
